About the book

What happens when a little girl who loves drawing rainbows is made to feel she should stop? Take Back the Rainbow is a heartfelt picture book about creativity, confidence, and the courage to hold on to what brings you joy.

She fills every page with bright arcs of red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple. No reason needed. Just pure delight. But when her classmates make her feel that her rainbows are something she has to explain, she quietly puts her crayons away, and the world around her slowly begins to lose its color.

With the gentle wisdom of an older artist in her neighborhood and the steady love of her parents, she begins to understand that rainbows can mean many things to many people, and that her own joy in them is hers to keep. Will she find the courage to pick up her colors again?

A note for parents: Alexandra Smith wrote this book for every parent who feels frustrated over what their child is exposed to in school at a very young age, and for every child who just simply loves rainbows.
